The love from across the oceans
The missionaries consecrate their valuable life time to Taiwan.
Since Taiwan opened the trading seaports in 1860s, many missionaries have traveled from far away to Taiwan. At that time, the hygiene conditions in Taiwan were very poor and medical services were greatly behind. Many people tended to turn to gods by drawing lots, folk remedies, and Chinese medicine doctors being of uncertain quality. Christian missionaries believed that it was efficient to develop mission along with importing western medicine. So the missionaries went deep into remote villages as well as various parts of Taiwan and set up hospitals and medical schools in Taiwan so that the birth of western medical knowledge and hospitals was carried out.
Dr. Noordhoff established the foundation with the hope of reaching more people.
These missionaries who held the vision of saving more needing people left their home countries to Taiwan and spent the time of their valuable age. They studied hard the local language and words from the start and took part in local communities. For the long years, every one of them has their own Chinese names. They not only uplifted the standard of medical care in Taiwan, but also won respect and gratitude from Taiwanese.
The foundation grants the poor patients for transportation and living.
Among the missionaries, Dr. Noordhooff from the US, who regarded Taiwan as his home town, ran his medical practice on this land for four decades. He having a nick name of “Angel of Face Patching” specialized in cleft lip and palate surgery and also healed the hearting soul. He imported the advance medical facilities used in the developed country and minded the aborigines in Taiwan. He launched and had mountain tours of medical services throughout many parts of Taiwan. Moreover, he established Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation with his own donation of NT 3 million as to execute charities to benefit patients in Taiwan and around the world.

Together with the growth of economy, Taiwan catches up with the up-to-date medical knowledge and skills. In the past the foreign physicians have fostered good local medical specialties. Now, Taiwan is able to provide well-educated physicians as voluntary medical teams to serve abroad or into undeveloped areas, passing the love without borders.
Taiwan’s medical team went into the backward countries and provided voluntary medical services.
