It was very difficult for the medical workers in the beginning for the shortage of medical resources and facilities. There were 13 nurses in the hospital. Yet, the God father, doctors, friars, and nuns in one mind went through the hardship. They set a great model.

It was an age of extremely deficiency in medical care in 1960’s. Friars treated patients with mercy. The hospital expansion always could not match the need of numerous patients. Nurses were also in short supply. In 1964, they proposed to found Saint Mary’s Nursing School to foster more nurses. In 1989, they at last found the way to succeed in the consent of headquarter of Roman Catholic. It was a building with an area of about 5,300 ping of 11-storey for outpatient clinic and the Surgery Department. For high quality of medical service to Yilan residents, a new 12-storey hospital building with an area of approximately 6,400 ping opened in 2007.
