Given his contributions to the medical care in Taiwan and research achievements in plastic surgery in the world, his alma mater Hope College, awarded him an honorary PhD degree. The picture was he and his wife. (1988)

“Taiwan is my home and I call Taiwan home” often said Dr. Noordhooff. However, he said, “I respect my wife and as a very old doctor, I cannot keep on performing surgery indefinitely. My wife wants to go back to the US so I want to go back to.” His wife, Lucy, said that they spent 40 years in Taiwan and Taiwan has given them the best present, i.e. friendship of Taiwanese. However, all the parties have to end. Their children were becoming increasingly worried about their parents, who were getting older. Hence, they decided it was time to go back to the US.

Farewell to Dr. Noordhooff

“All my good friends are here in Taiwan. I do not have many friends in the US“, said Lucy upon her departure. At the farewell party, Mr. Yung-ching Wang, Chairman of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, still tried to make Dr. Noordhooff stay. Mr. Yung-ching Wang said in his speech that he felt very sorry that Dr. Noordhooff had to leave. He said that Dr. Noordhooff was to serve the world and continue to make his contributions. It was fortunate of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital that Dr. Noordhooff could be here for so long. His heart would always be with us.

Dr. Noordhooff spent 40 years in Taiwan. His youngest son, Dirck, quoted Mark Twain in describing his father’s love for Taiwan, by saying his vocation is his vacation. This is because Dr. Noordhooff gained great satisfaction from his work. This is why Dr. Noordhooff is so special. Farewell, Dr.Noordhooff!
