Give the Fusion of Eastern and Western Instruments an Innovative Try

The incorporation of traditional opera into modern music has been an ongoing innovative endeavor in recent years. However, there are concerns about whether traditional opera might lose its original characteristics when blended with modern music. In response, instructor Chi-Liang Chang from the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts believes that traditional opera was a form of popular music in its own time. As times have changed and people's preferences have diversified, we have begun to boldly experiment with opera music, blending it with jazz, classical music, and even modern electronic music and digital visuals, striving for innovative musical performances. By incorporating cross-genre elements, we aim to create rich sounds and melodies, offering our audiences a new and artistic musical experience.

Innovative Transformation to Tap into the Youth Market

Instructor Chi-Liang Chang stated that from a professional perspective, the challenge of integrating traditional and modern music on the same stage lies in the fact that the contemporary opera has to preserve the features of the traditional opera while also taking into account commercialization to cater to audience alley. Undoubtedly, the most important task, he emphasized, is to encourage playwrights and directors to innovate in opera and scriptwriting, and to intensify efforts in continually producing excellent operas that meet the demands of both the times and the market. Through cross-genre music composition, the perfect musical fusion of East and West reinterprets the traditional opera. It is hoped that the audience will accept, enjoy, and appreciate this blend, thereby achieving the goals of cultural inheritance and promotion. The result of this fusion is something the audience can eagerly anticipate.
