Makeup
Opera is a comprehensive art, and makeup is an integral part of it. Like the costume, lighting, scenery and other departments, makeup creates art using plastic arts methods. Make-up is the use of rubbing and smearing methods to create and virtualize the roles of various characters in a silent manner to highlight the characters’ appearances. The makeup of opera characters is discussed as follows:

Before the performance, the actors will apply makeup and decoration on their faces and heads according to the characteristics of the characters they play.

Makeu art should accentuate actors’ appearance, the characters’ personality, and the characters’ identity.
Opera Character Makeup:
- Cleaning and care: Before putting on opera makeup, performers must clean their skin and do simple care. This can prevent oil paint from invading the skin and causing various skin problems after applying makeup.
- Applying base makeup: The base color in opera makeup needs to be mixed with red and white oil paint to a tender flesh color, and then the color is applied to the performers’ skin. The color must be evenly applied, and the thickness of the oil paint must be controlled. If it is too thin, the performers’ original skin color will be exposed. On the contrary, if it is too thick, the performers will look like wearing a mask and very dull.
- 3. Blush: Opera makeup requires oil paint. The blush needs to be patted onto the skin and let it blend into the base oil paint. The best color is rose red, which looks more natural. Blush on the upper eyelids is the reddest.
- Setting makeup: To set the makeup, it is necessary to apply the makeup from top to bottom and from inside to outside. Start with the base color first, then apply blush, and finally apply the floating powder on the face.
- Applying rouge: The methods of applying rouge and blush are basically consistently. However, the difference between them is that rouge can make the facial makeup more vivid. It is necessary to remember that the upper eyelids are the darkest.
- Drawing eye circles: 6. The eye circles in opera makeup should be exaggerated, but during the makeup process, it is necessary to remember to apply it according to the shape of the eyes and the body shape of the character. If the makeup is excessive, the effect will not be good.
- Eyebrows: Eyebrows are also a very important part of opera makeup. They should be based on the character. For example, Qing Yi Hua Dan needs willow-shaped eyebrows to create a three-dimensional effect.
- Lips: Firstly, use bright red oil paint to outline the edges of the lips. Secondly, apply makeup in the opposite way according to the character’s lips. For example, for a character with thin lips, it is necessary to create larger lips. For a character with a big mouth, it is necessary to create a smaller mouth.

On the opera stage, the actors’ makeup and costumes are the audience’s first impression.

Some makeup is not done by the actors themselves but requires assistance from others.
