Tables and chairs in traditional opera; small props with great uses
In the center of the traditional opera stage, tables and chairs are usually placed in different ways to express different meanings during the performance. They represent different locations and environments. For example: a table on the stage can represent a dining table, a bed, a mausoleum, or a building or a mountain. A chair can represent an inner room, a study room, a wall, a door, or a well. The combination of tables and chairs can represent a tower, a ship, etc.
The functions of the chairs on the stage are different from those at home. The chairs are not just for sitting. Different combinations of tables and chairs have even more different meanings. Taking a table and a chair for example, when there is a table in the center and a chair behind the table, it is called a large seat. Different furnishings on the table can represent a study, a court, or a person sleeping. If the chair is placed in front of the table, it is called a small seat, which means that the character is idle or waiting for news.
The combination of a table and two chairs can represent a palace, a government office, a Buddhist hall, a living room, etc. A chair placed in front of the table represents home, and a chair placed behind the table represents court. The table has a tablecloth, and the chairs have chair fabrics. Different colors and patterns represent different family identities. The yellow ones are for emperors, the pink embroidered ones are for young ladies, and the blue ones without flowers are for poor men. In addition to these placement methods, there are also two tables and two chairs, two tables and four chairs, three tables and five chairs, three tables and six chairs, three tables and seven chairs, etc., which represent different meanings. For example, two tables and two chairs represent a banquet, and three tables and multiple chairs represent a grand banquet or trial.

The chair in front of the table implies that the character is idle or waiting for news.

Three tables and many chairs imply a grand banquet or trial.
From the perspective of function and use, stage props mainly include the following aspects:
Props of curtains: It is a kind of small tent which is widely used in operas. For example, a cloth tent is used when the marshal takes the stage to order generals. In general, the sedan chair used by women is also represented by a cloth tent.
Props of small flag used by scouts: a prop used by detectives or distant detectives.
Props of alms bowl:It is a round soup bowl, which is a Buddhist food utensil or a magical tool for suppressing demons. It represents a knife used by Gods in the opera.

Props of big tents:A large embroidered curtain inserted upright on the back of a chair. The objective existence is not just a curtain. It also represents many environments like tables and chairs.

The task of props on stage is to help actors complete their movements.
